Would you wear a diamond if you knew it was ripped from the earth by someone forced to work in horrific, inhumane conditions?

That, unfortunately, is reality. That’s the reality of mined diamonds.

We believe that a piece of jewelry—no matter how beautiful—is simply not worth the human and environmental cost of mining.

Still, nearly 90% of brides-to-be prefer a mined diamond over other stones for their engagement ring. We hope it’s because they just don’t know that there is an alternative.

In an attempt to alleviate guilt, many jewelers will provide Kimberley Process certificates for the diamonds they sell. The process was an attempt by the international community to monitor diamonds that were mined with human rights violations or under the control of gangs supporting civil wars in Africa.

Though an admirable idea, in reality the Kimberley Process is flawed. Enforcement problems are rampant, certificates are often forged before the diamonds even arrive in the U.S., and loopholes are gaping. For example, the Kimberley Process does not address child labor or environmental degradation.

These are among the most important reasons why we do not sell or buy mined diamonds. Ever.
