6 Swoon-Worthy Holiday Proposals
November 30th, 2017 / Alese Oldenburg
It’s no secret that Christmas Day and Christmas Eve are two of the three most popular days to get engaged. So if you’re thinking of asking a certain question this holiday season, here are six ideas to make it memorable!
Presents on the Tree
This adorable proposal is perfect for an intimate proposal in front of family or friends. Find an ornament you like (or make one!). Get creative with the wording—“marry me” and “engaged” are two of our favorites—or customize it by adding her name. Don’t sweat it if your penmanship isn’t ornament-quality. That’s what Etsy is for! Fasten the ring to the top of the ornament and hang it on the tree for her to find. Another gorgeous spin on this proposal? Choose a clear ornament and suspend the ring inside. Stunning!
Pro tips:1. Get a friend or family member involved. Have them hang the ornament so as not to raise suspicions!
2. If letting the ring out of your sight gives you anxiety, have her find the newest ornament on the tree. When she does, she’ll read “Will you marry me?” on it, and turn to you. That’s your cue—take it from there with the ring in your hand.
Question over Cocoa
Get cozy! After an outdoor activity like a sleigh ride or ice skating, snuggle up with cocoa and pop the question. The key to getting this cute proposal right is finding mugs that fit the theme to serve the hot chocolate. Want to make it even sweeter? Add marshmallows, a candy cane or whipped cream to the top. Cheers!
Pro tips:Instagram-worth staging is a real thing! Mug or a cute blanket are important touchs that make the moment look planned and thoughtful.
“Pup” the Question
Get your fur baby involved in the proposal! We love keeping it simple here with a nice ribbon tying the ring securely around Fido’s neck. With an animal involved, it’s best to keep this style of proposal quiet and calm—so do this one at home without crowds or a lot of extra excitement. The emotion of this special proposal is perfection. Don’t have a fur baby yet? Consider another gift—after all, it’s the holidays and is there a better gift than a lifetime of happiness delivered with a puppy or kitten? No. There is nothing better!
Pro tips:1. Keep treats on hand when you pop the question. The extra excitement—even for well-behaved dogs, may ignite a playful spirit.
2. Check out Etsy for ready-made signs, dog tags and banners. Remember, it’s these little details that make it “Insta-worthy” and personal.
Signs Point to Engaged
This proposal idea requires a little extra planning. Find a picturesque spot outdoors and stage an area with a blanket, a thermos of hot chocolate and a “Marry Me” sign. We also love putting some lights on the trees to make it feel even more festive!
Pro tips:1. Hire a photographer or recruit a talented friend to capture the moment. This is Instagram-worthy!
2. Unless you are a DIY expert, don’t make your signs yourself. Use fancy fonts and frame a print or purchase a banner. You can even go all out with big gold balloons—just make sure they are weighted so they don’t fly away.
Tree Farm Tradition
You’ll start a new tree cutting tradition with this proposal! Go to cut down a tree together. You’ll need an accomplice, so recruit a friend or bring family members! Have your assistant tie the ring to a tree using ribbon. You’ve found “the one”—she just won’t know you mean her, not the tree!
Pro tips:Don’t wait for midnight! Do it early in the night. It’s unexpected, but she’ll be dressed up and ready for a New Year’s Bash that is perfect to start out your engagement!
The Kiss Before Midnight
Throw her off the scent and skip a Christmas proposal altogether. New Year’s Eve is a romantic night to propose, with the added benefit that it’s a built-in celebration! Fill your living room with metallic balloons and have champagne at the ready. Keep it private or have your friends and family there to shower you with hugs and well-wishes.
Pro tips:Don’t wait for midnight! Do it early in the night. It’s unexpected, but she’ll be dressed up and ready for a New Year’s Bash that is perfect to start out your engagement!
